Abstract
The use of green traps to attract the insect pests is a well-known method. A plant that is cultivated as a green trap should have an oviposition or nutritional advantage for the pest. Considering the damage that stem borers bring to sugarcane crop, use of different methods along with biological control of this pest by Telenomus busseolae Gahan (Hym.: Platygastridae) provides better results to reduce their damage. therefore, this study was done with aiming attract of moth of stem borer to green plant trap, plow green trap field in the right time and eventually reducing of damage level in vicinity sugarcane field during two years. In the first and second year of this study, hybrid maize single cross SC704 and sorghum cv. Speed-feed (F2) was cultivated respectively in fields of Amirkabir Sugarcane Agro-industry Corporation (48° 10' E, 30° 4' N). After sufficient growth of the trap plants, the level of their infection and vicinity fields were evaluated. The results showed that in first year, the mean percentage of infected stem in cultivated maize and sugarcane fields was equal to 1.88 and 34/4 respectively. Also in second year, the mean percentage of infected stem in sorghum fields and sugarcane fields was equal to 62/46 and 6/25 respectively. Therefore, the variety of cultivated maize did not succeed in attraction of stem borer pest while sorghum cv. speed-feed (F2) was successful and could be used as a green trapping plant in managing population of these pests. application of this plant along with others methods of management of sugarcane stem borers pest such as rearing and releasing of T. busseolae, using a combination of sugar cane cultivars, timely harvesting of crop, preventing the transfer of wintering populations to the next year, the correct use of light and pheromone traps and protection of other biological control agents will play an effective role in reducing damage level of these pests.
